Obituary

Christine Delores Newsome, née Owens, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and cherished friend, left this earthly realm and joined the ancestors on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

Christine was born on August 4, 1948, in Montezuma, Georgia, to the late Louis and Nancy Owens, née Engram. She was the youngest of three children.

Christine was educated in the Roselle Public School System, attending Lincoln Elementary School and Abraham Clark High School, where she graduated in 1966.

Her Christian journey began at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where she was baptized at the age of 12 under the leadership of the late Rev. James Bullock.

Throughout her life, Christine remained connected to her church and faithfully served in various ministries. As a young girl, Christine was a member of the Young Vocalaires, Junior Choir, and Usher Board. As she grew older, she became a member of the Young Adult Choir, where she proudly served as President. In her adult years, Christine continued her service to the church, contributing her time and talents to the Church Outing Committee and Repast Committee.

Christine met George Newsome, and on May 7, 1977, they were joined in holy matrimony. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Nichelle Nichol “Nikki” Newsome.

Christine began her professional career at Bell Atlantic, which later became Verizon, where she worked as a telephone operator. She dedicated 27 years to the company before retiring. Always eager to learn and pursue new opportunities, Christine had a desire to work in the medical field. She enrolled in classes and completed her training to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). She went on to work for Genesis Healthcare for 12 years, caring for others with the same kindness and compassion she showed throughout her life. She eventually retired from the workforce, just in time to embrace one of her most cherished titles: “Grammie.”

Christine, affectionately known as Chrissy, was blessed with a kind and gentle spirit. She was almost always smiling, and her warm presence could brighten a room. She also had an impeccable memory and a remarkable ability to remember even the smallest details about the people and experiences that mattered to her.

Chrissy knew how to enjoy life and find happiness in the simple things. She loved going to see plays in New York, going to the movies, shopping, dining at Outback Steakhouse, and indulging in candy, especially her beloved Tootsie Roll lollipops. She also enjoyed taking trips to Atlantic City, where she would try her luck at the slot machines. And no summer was complete without a trip to Coney Island, where she enjoyed playing games and, of course, treating herself to Nathan’s while she was there.

A Cherished Mother and Grammie

Her daughter, Nichelle, was her pride and joy. Chrissy and Nikki shared a special bond filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. From their Florida vacations, including the hilarious moment they ran from a bug and left their luggage behind, to the many simple moments they shared, their love for one another was undeniable.

Being a grandmother brought Chrissy another special kind of joy. She loved spoiling Aidan and Addison with toys, Christmas surprises, trips to Chuck E. Cheese. She cherished watching them laugh, play, and grow.

For Chrissy, it was never just about the toys, games, or outings it was about making memories and making her grandchildren feel loved. Those memories and her love will remain in their hearts forever.

Christine was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Nancy Owens.

She leaves to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy: her daughter, Nichelle N. Hairston (Aaron) of Perth Amboy, NJ; her grandchildren, Aidan Perry Hairston and Addison Nichol Hairston; her sister, Beverly A. Owens of Roselle, NJ; her brother, Louis Owens of Newark, NJ; her niece, Amina Owens; her children of the heart, Patrick, Marnetta, Savannah, and George; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Although Christine may be gone from our sight, she will never be gone from our hearts.
