Maurice Anna Mosley Cummins was born on October 11, 1930, in Jersey City to Elijah Louis Mosley and Rosemond Elizabeth Badger Mosley. She was the only daughter in a family of nine children. Affectionately known as “Sister” by family and friends, Maurice moved with her family to Roselle at the age of three, where they became devoted members of Heard A.M.E. Church. Maurice was united in holy matrimony to John Jacob Cummins on September 12, 1954, at Heard A.M.E. Church by Rev. Louis H. Midgette. Their loving union of 57 years was blessed with three children: Beverly Rose Cummins, Pastor Robert Louis Cummins, and John Maurice Cummins. At an early age, Maurice joined Heard A.M.E. Church and became actively involved in many ministries and organizations. She attended Sunday School and participated in the Christian Endeavor Young Children’s Group. Throughout the years, she faithfully served in “The Little Singers Choir,” Junior Ushers, Intermediate Choir, Young Adult Choir, and later the Senior Choir, where she was elected Treasurer in January 1991 and continued to serve diligently. Maurice also volunteered faithfully in the church kitchen and Fellowship Dining Hall whenever needed. Maurice later became a member of “The Good Samaritan Club” under the leadership of Mr. Stanley Parker and was also a member of the Roselle Optimist Club, where she dedicated her time to working with the youth of Roselle. In September 1947, Maurice was awarded a scholarship to attend the Eastern Conservatory of Music and Art at Abraham Clark High School in recognition of her outstanding involvement in the Heard A.M.E. Church Sunday School. Her love for music flourished as she continued her studies and enjoyed playing the piano at church programs and recitals. Maurice graduated from Abraham Clark High School in June 1948. A gifted athlete, she loved baseball, basketball, and football and was voted “Girl Athlete” by her classmates for her outstanding skills in basketball, softball, and soccer. She also treasured gathering with classmates and lifelong friends affectionately known as the “48ers.” Following graduation, Maurice began her professional career at Goerkes Department Store in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and later worked for National Tool and Dye Company in Kenilworth, New Jersey. In May 1949, Maurice was employed at Camp Kilmer in Stelton, NJ, as a Clerk-Typist. She was later transferred to Raritan Arsenal in Metuchen, NJ, where she served as a Typographer, typing confidential and secret documents for the United States Government for twelve years. In June 1966, Maurice joined Graver Water Company in Union, New Jersey, as an Administrative Secretary, where she faithfully worked for twenty- eight years before retiring in October 1994 after many years of devoted service. Maurice’s dedication and faithfulness did not go unnoticed. In May 1991, she was honored at Heard A.M.E. Church as a Captain for Women’s Day and received a trophy for her service. In September 2011, she received a plaque honoring her as an “Unsung Hero” by the Louise Wilson Women’s Missionary Society of Heard A.M.E. Church. In May 2012, she was honored as “Mother of the Year,” and in October 2012, she became a member of the church’s Senior Fellowship Group. In June 2013, Rev. Archie Cummings, Jr. appointed her to Stewardess Board No. 2. In February 2016, Maurice was recognized as one of “The Fabulous Five” during Heard A.M.E. Church’s 92nd Anniversary Celebration Service for over 75 years of membership and faithful service. On May 15, 2026, Maurice peacefully departed this life at her home in Roselle at the age of 95, surrounded by her loving family.
