Raymond Jennings Jr., affectionately known as “June,” was born on December 2, 1949, in Newark, New Jersey, to the late Raymond Jennings Sr. and Willie Bertha Jennings.
He was raised in Newark’s Hayes Homes on West Kinney Street and received his education through the Newark Public School system. Raymond proudly graduated from Central High School in 1968 and continued his studies at Rutgers University in Newark, NJ. During his youth, he developed a love for sports, especially basketball and football.
In his adult years, Raymond made his home in Roselle, NJ, and later retired to Virginia Beach, VA. His home there was always open to family, friends, and all who he loved.
Raymond worked as a Maintenance Supervisor at PSE&G before beginning a long career as a bus driver. He drove for One Bus Company for over 17 years before continuing his service with New Jersey Transit, where he remained until his retirement. He was a source of energy on his daily route for his passengers.
Whether it was The Whispers, The Stylistics, Earth, Wind & Fire, or The Delfonics, you could catch “June” in front of a mirror singing his heart out. In his mind, he was an honorary member of each of those groups. His favorite song, “Lady,” was always on repeat.
Raymond had a deep love for fashion. He loved to get dressed up and show off his impeccable style. He always knew where to find the latest fashion trends and made sure those around him looked their best too.
Raymond was a man of his word. When he spoke, he commanded respect. He would listen—but he would also let you know exactly where he stood. When called upon, he showed up. He gave a good hug—or a good “tighten up” when needed. He was enthusiastic and motivational, embodying the “I can do” mentality and inspiring those around him to believe the same. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed being the center of attention. He gave time and love to all those who entered his life. He was not perfect, but he was honest, and that made him unforgettable.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley Clanton-Jennings; his parents Raymond and Willie Jennings; his sisters Patricia Postell, Roberta Hamilton, and Paulette Chavis; his brother Roland Jennings; and his grandson Zaire Lassiter.
Raymond leaves to cherish his memory three daughters: Dawn Fisher (Nathan) of Sayreville, NJ; Nakeyl Johnson (Abdullah) of Newark, NJ; and Robin Jennings (Naim) of Tampa, FL; three sons: Darrin Jennings (Taronn), Raymond Jennings III, and Branden Jennings; and a bonus daughter, Marcia Clark of Sayreville, NJ.
